The truth of the matter (a truth Western men in particular absolutely hate) is that fatherhood is a cultural invention. Many societies have, and some still have, matrilineal kinship where fatherhood is not ever an issue as children belong soley to their mother's family. Our modern legal system is letting these men out of responsibility. Pretty much, men today have been granted rights without responsibility and women are still bearing babies the only thing that has changed is that we are saddled with all of the traditional obligations of men and have no security. Although I'm not a feminist and advocate for tradition I do like Mary Ann Mason's work on this subject. Unwed fathers should not be granted rights soley based on their biological relation. There is also no reason for a very young child to be ripped away from its mother by a father who has never lived with nor supported either the mother or the child. Most unwed fathers deny all responsibility as Justices Burger and Blacmun so rightfully pointed out. I have written on this subject in my article "Why Patriarchy." Though I suspect most women will be immediately turned off by the word "patriarchy" we should just keep in mind that there has to be some form of family stability and if fathers are to be brought into the family and have rights to their children then they need to do their part of providing for the mother and child. The Radical Onehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03933489101373415907noreply@blogger.com
